Culture Jam, a 12 hour marathon of events co-ordinated by the British Lithuanian Youth Association in partnership with Birmingham based EC-Arts and Chiltern Railways, is set to take centre stage at Moor Street Station and the Volt Warehouse in the heart of Birmingham this coming November.
The series of events, now in its third year, celebrates and recognises the cultural contributions of Western and Eastern European creatives through an inspirational programme spanning 2 events over twelve hours in two amazing Birmingham city centre locations.
2009 sees CultureJam explore the shared past, present and future of British and Lithuanian culture through photography, film, art and music on such subjects as genocide, war, political emancipation, nostalgia, cultural revolution and new and emerging subcultures.
CultureJam launches at Birmingham’s Grade II listed Moor Street Station, which is served by Chiltern Railways, at 3.00pm on Saturday 14 November with traditional Eastern European delicatessen food and a presentation of Mission Siberia. The group of explorers recall the harrowing experience of a journey to Siberia, researching untold stories of genocide and mass deportation by the brutal Soviet regime during World War II, in an evocative and poignant performance.
Moor Street Station also plays host to the unveiling of a stunning photography exhibition featuring the work of Lithuanian born artists Rokas Darulis and Indre Serpytyte and interior designer Rokas Rupeikis, offering a visual insight into the striking similarities and differences between the artists’ own roots and the impact of British communities.
Birmingham based filmaker and CultureJam programme co-ordinator Sam Groves will present a diverse selection of short art-documentaries produced by independent filmmakers from across the West Midlands and Lithuania, including a short on the demise of the MG Rover factory in Longbridge, and a hard hitting drama about the journey of an Eastern European family who move to the region.
Switching to the industrial surroundings of Digbeth’s Volt Warehouse, CultureJam continues into the night with live performances from two incredible bands, Norwegian/Lithuanian cinematic six-piece Rasa Basom and electro folk pioneers Black Diamond Bay.
The ones who are unable to join us in Birmingham, Culture Jam as one part session will be organised in London on 13 November in vibrant Brick Lane area at East Gallery. The photo exhibition and sculpture installations by Migle Backovaite, Deividas Sutkaitis, Tomas Urbelionis and Rosemary Shawyer artists will start at 6pm and will continue with short films and Mission Siberia talks until 10pm. The London event will be finalised with various DJ’s at ‘93 Feet East’ bar.
Culture Jam is happening because of the curiosity and enthusiasm of young creative people and a successful partnership of public and private bodies. The project is managed by the British Lithuanian Youth Association in partnership with EC-Arts and Chiltern Railways.
